PEKIN ~ James Alan Ashbaker, 56, of Pekin, passed away at 4 p.m., Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at his residence.

He was born January 9, 1961 in Pekin to Harold E. and Rose M. (Culp) Ashbaker.

Surviving are his parents of Pekin; one brother, William E. (Mary) Ashbaker of Pekin; two nephews, Christopher (Jessica) Ashbaker and Michael Ashbaker, both of Pekin; two nieces, Cathryn (Sam) Smith of Easton and Amy Ashbaker of Pekin and one grandniece, Mirabelle Ashbaker.

His grandparents preceded him in death.

A 1979 graduate of Pekin Community High School, Jim served in the United States Air Force for 20 years, retiring as an electronic warfare systems technician.  He then worked as a defense engineer for Raytheon Corporation in McKinney, Texas.  In addition to having earned his Bachelor’s Degree, Jim had earned a Master’s Degree in Construction Management and a Master’s Degree in Electronic Engineering.

A bicycle enthusiast, Jim enjoyed both road and mountain bike races and marathons.  He also was passionate traveling, camping and scuba diving.  He dived for more than 35 years and was a certified dive master.  Jim will be remembered as a quiet and laid back individual who always was willing to help.

He was of the Christian faith.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.  Kenneth Seest will officiate.  Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and also 30 minutes before the funeral, both at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, with military rites accorded by the United States Air Force.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Peoria Honor Flight.
