PEKIN ~ Raymond Louis “Skip” Marvel, 87, of Pekin, passed away at 9:05 a.m. Saturday, November 26, 2016 at his home.

Born April 9, 1929 in Peoria to Ralph Louis and Roberta B. (Shields) Marvel, he married Darlene Abernathy on June 16, 1956 in Peoria.

Surviving are his wife of Pekin; two daughters, RaeAnn (Walter) Laylock of Metamora and Debbie Marvel of Miami, Florida; three grandchildren, Cassie (Trace) McIntosh of Metamora, Nichole (Ryne) Komnick of Lincoln and Jenna Zimmer of Tampa, Florida; six great-grandchildren, Zoe, Aidan, Ryne, Abraham McIntosh and Cruze and Raelee Komnick; three sisters-in-law, Rita (Frank) Dunlap, Geraldine Thornhill and Sharon (Joe) Heubi; three brothers-in-law, Bob Abernathy, Ron (Mary) Abernathy and Rick (Lynne) Abernathy and a very special family member, Debby Simkins.

Raymond served in the United States Army as a cook from 1951 to 1953 while stationed in Japan.

He worked at Roszells and Sealtest in Peoria for 40 years, retiring in 1987 and then worked at Sears in Peoria for 20 years, retiring in 2007.

Raymond played and coached for Proctor Center Baseball League as well as the Kickapoo Valley League and Peoria Sunday Morning League. He later coached the Creve Coeur Pony League.

He was a current member of the Chicago Cubs diehard fan club, as well as the Teamster’s 627, American Legion Post #1234 in Creve Coeur and past President of Creve Coeur Lion’s Club.

Raymond served on several boards at Christ Lutheran Church in Peoria, where he was a longtime member.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to his caregivers at UnityPoint Health Hospice, especially Dawn, Lisa, Marlyn and Mary.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Christ Lutheran Church in Peoria. Pastor Karl Eckhoff will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Additional visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery in Peoria. Military rites will be provided by the United States Army and the Tazewell Military Rites Team.
