PEKIN ~ Richard John Heberer, 85, of Pekin, passed away at 11:54 p.m. Thursday, November 24, 2016 at Pekin Hospital.

Born July 13, 1931 in Peoria to Earl John and Vivian Alice (Welch) Heberer, he married Flora Jean Glidewell on September 4, 1959 in Streator. 

Surviving are his wife, Jean of Pekin; two sons, Rev. R. Keith Heberer of Vandalia and G. Scott (Debbie) Heberer of Manito; one daughter, J. Renee (Phil) Schertz of Metamora; nine grandchildren, Benjamin Heberer, Sydney Heberer, Jade Heberer, Brittany Heberer, Raina Heberer, James Schertz, Jacob Schertz, Nicholas Schertz and Logan Schertz; one brother, Lloyd Heberer of Pekin and one sister, Shirley Harper of Peoria.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter, Sherri Heberer; three brothers, Earl Heberer, Harold Heberer and Gerald Heberer and one sister, Betty Rakestraw.

Rich served in the United States Air Force in the Korean War and attained the rank of Corporal.

He worked for American Distilling in Pekin for 22 years and then worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 16 years, retiring in 1993 from Mossville.  His retirement job was working for Pekin Park District at Parkview Golf Course in maintenance. 

He was passionate about sharing and serving his Lord.  Rich had a great heart and will be remembered by his family as a selfless person.  He loved to visit with others and especially enjoyed sharing the Word of God.  He also served others by delivering meals for the Neighborhood House through the Miller Center in Pekin. 

Rich loved being in church and spending time with family.  He attended Pekin First Church of the Nazarene for many years.  He enjoyed golfing and gardening.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.  The Rev. H. Gerald Rudd and Rev. W. Lloyd Brock will officiate.  Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin.
