EAST PEORIA ~ Verne E. Harris, 84, of East Peoria, passed away at 10:40 a.m. Friday, October 14, 2016 at Morton Terrace Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
Born January 3, 1932 in Browning to Otto V. and Murine (Bradley) Harris, he married Viola M. Worley on April 5, 1952 in East Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Gail (Rob) Bort of Washington, Brenda Lyles of Morton, and Terri (Steve) Knobeloch of East Peoria; eight grandchildren, Michelle (Jeff) Gabris, Dan (Karen) Bort, Jason (Carrie) Lyles, Brad (Katie) Lyles, Hollie (Ryan) Brennemann, Derek Knobeloch, Ryan Knobeloch and Shelby Knobeloch; ten great-grandchildren, Jacob Gabris, Emily Gabris, Alysa Bort, Dakoda Brennemann, Londyn Brennemann, Ahria Lyles, Madison Lyles, Bailey Lyles, Brooklyn Lyles and Peyton Lyles; one brother, Richard (Iris) Harris of Salmon, Idaho; one sister, Sherry (David) Mudd of Tremont; and many nieces and nephews.
Verne was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Paul; and one infant daughter, Connie Harris.
He was a member of Faith Church in Washington.
Verne had served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed the opportunity to go on the Greater Peoria Honor Flight in September 2015 with his daughter, Terri.
He had worked in security at Caterpillar, Inc. for eighteen years. He later worked as a greeter at Walmart in Morton and Pekin for four years.
Country music was his passion and he performed with many groups in and around the Pekin and Peoria area, including the Country Allstars.
His funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur. The Rev. David Lee Mudd will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home. Burial will be in Smithville Cemetery, where military honors will be provided by the United States Army.
